Subject: Cochituate Brook reservation: Red-winged
blackbirds
From: Jim M <jamesjr_54(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 3 Dec 2009 10:00am
I get out to Cochituate Brook Reservation in Framingham/Natick a few times a
week, as my office is less than a block away. Dec. 2 was highlighted by a flock
of at least 16 red winged blackbirds in an alder on the north side of the creek.
Also very busy with the usual suspects: chickadees, MODOs, white-breasted
nuthatches, juncos, house finches, song and white-throated sparrows.
Also spotted a belted kingfisher, and a great blue heron that hangs out by the
dam that drains the north pond of Lake Cochituate into the brook.

This morning at 7:55 as I was driving to work, I noticed a very large =
raptor soaring with the winds above Snow Mill Pond in Fitchburg on Rte =
2A. I pulled over onto the shoulder of the road and grabbed my =
binoculars and was able to view a gorgeous adult Bald Eagle. He circled =
the waters for a few more minutes and then flew to a White Pine tree =
across the pond near the power lines. Spectacular! What a great way to =
begin the day!

Subject: Fresh Pond Horned Grebes, dog aggression,
Peregrine

Massbirders,
A beautiful tiercel Peregrine Falcon put on a great aerial show near Fresh
Pond (at Concord ave and Blanchard rd), and I was surprised to find 3 Horned
Grebes on the pond.
That being said, I was attacked by an unleashed dog at Fresh Pond for the
THIRD time this year. Please be careful birding around the pond (especially
on gorgeous days like today, when everyone's out with their dogs). And dog
owners, please obey the local leash laws (last time I checked, all
non-residents had to keep dogs leashed at FP). Can anybody tell me offlist-
to whom I should report aggressive dogs at Fresh Pond?
The highlights from the 1.5-hour trip (3:00-4:30) follows:
HORNED GREBE- 3, my first for the pond, in the Southeast corner.
Peregrine Falcon- 1, dive-bombing starlings over Concord Ave- spectacular.
Canvasback- 22, in tight group on South end, very relaxed and tolerant of
close approach
Ring-necked Duck- 30, half in tight flock, half scattered
Ruddy Duck- 2
Hooded Merganser- 9 at Black's Nook
Mourning Dove- 29- high count.
Brown Creeper- 1
Good birding,
William Freedberg

Subject: eBird Report - Eastern Point - Gloucester Harbor--IBA , 12/3/09
Location: Eastern Point - Gloucester Harbor--IBA
Observation date: 12/3/09
Notes: I could have stayed home in the Fenway to get Clay-colored Sparrow and
Orange-crowned Warbler, but I already knew they were there! Due to the strong
winds, sea viewing was tough. Therefore, my seabird count is very low. Brace
Cove was just swarming with seagulls and little flies around the seaweed. at
night, moths were swarming in Eastern Point. An adorable Harbor Seal greeted me
as I was on the tip of Dogbar. Impressive surf flying over the seawall on Stacy
Blvd.(Fishermen's Monument area)

Hello,
I saw an adult Bald Eagle soaring over Prospect St in essentially downtown
Northampton this morning. Also took a lunch break in the East Meadows in
Northampton and there were hundreds of Horned Larks and some Snow Buntings
in the East Meadows. They did not settle down much because they were trying
to avoid becoming lunch for a Merlin that kept buzzing them.
