In  Bernalillo County: 
At the Rio Grande Nature Center DP on May 25 had an OVENBIRD on  
the  trail to the demonstration gardens.  KH reported two CEDAR  
WAXWINGS on May 30. 
JR at Alameda and Corrales Roads saw a  MONK PARAKEET which was  
nesting near the McDonalds.  
RG reported an immature male AMERICAN  REDSTART in Otero Canyon  
near  Tijeras by the water on May 26. 
JP on May 19 in the Sandias between mile  5 and the Tree Springs  
Trailhead had a calling WHIP-POOR-WILL. 
DZ on June 5 reported a BURROWING OWL at  the Sandia Casino.

In  Catron County: 
SH on May 29 at US 189 north of Glenwood  had a BLACK HAWK. 
. 
In  Chaves County: 
At the Bitter Lake refuge DCo on May 27 saw the five LEAST TERNS  
and many SNOWY PLOVERS.  Also seen by CR and SD on May 30. 
North of Roswell and south of the Hwy. 20 turnoff, CR and SD had  
a flying SWALLOW-TAILED KITE at mile marker 136.  At the Mesa  
Rest stop there were two SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS.

In  Curry County: 
At the Clovis sewage ponds JP, WW, JO, and LL on May 21 saw a  
second year CALIFORNIA GULL there. 
JLo at his home in se. county had  LONG-BILLED CURLEWS being 
heard  daily.  On May 18 he had a SWAMP  SPARROW. 
. 
In  DeBaca County: 
JP and WW on May 22 at the Bosque Redondo  Park at Fort Sumner 
had a  BROWN THRASHER singing.  JP and WW  had a LEAST BITTERN  
calling on May 30. 
. 
In  Eddy County: 
At Rattlesnake Springs SW on May 20  
saw  four YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS and the two RED-EYED VIREOS .  On  
May 29  CR and SD did see the GRAY HAWK and a fly over MISSISSIPPI  
KITE  with a CATBIRD on May 30.  JH on May  13 had the CATBIRD. 
CR and SD on May 31 at the Sitting Bull  Falls east of Carlsbad  
had a  singing BLACK-CAPPED VIREO about .2 mile downstream from the  
picnic  area by walking down the road.  The  park is closed from 5:30  
to  8:30. 
. 
In  Grant County: 
LM on May 28 saw a BROWN PELICAN at  Roberts Lake. 
DCo on May 25 at Emory Pass in the Black  Range had a ZONE-TAILED  
HAWK,  TOWNSEND’S WARBLER, and two RED-FACED WARBLERS. 
. 
In  Guadalupe County: 
JNM and BW on May 19 at the railroad  bridge in Santa Rosa had a  
pair  of BLACK HAWKS, still the singing CAROLINA WREN, and a YELLOW- 
THROATED VIREO singing.  There was another pair of Black Hawks at a  
farm  about five miles south of Santa Rosa with CEDAR WAXWINGS.  On  
May 22  JP and WW found one Black Hawk, the vireo, and a CARDINAL. 
. 
In  Hidalgo County: 
NMC and RS on June 5 had a report from MM of a YELLOW GROSBEAK  
briefly on Stateline Road near Rodeo,  which then flew into AZ. 
SOW on May 28 had a WHITE-TAILED KITE just north of the Animas  
store.  On NM 9 at a  low spot in the Playas Valley he saw a BELL’S  
VIREO,  a calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE, two LUCY’S WARBLERS, and a  
SCRUB  JAY in this mesquite area at mile marker 26. 
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the  Diamond A (Gray) Ranch.   
Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must NOT go off  the  
road. 
. 
In  Lincoln County: 
CR and SD on May 30 had a nesting  SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in  
Ramon  on Hwy. 285. 
. 
In  Luna County: 
SOW on May 26 on NM 9 five miles west of  Columbus had a WHITE- 
TAILED  KITE near an old railroad bridge. 
.  
In  Mora County: 
RHu in the Sapello River Valley on the  Pritzlaff Ranch near San  
Ignacio on on May 28 recorded BAND-TAILED PIGEONS and CEDAR  
WAXWINGS with many TURKEYS, LEWIS’S WOODPECKER, GRAY FLYCATCHER,  
PURPLE  MARTIN, and a CATBIRD.  On June 3  there was SPOTTED  
SANDPIPERS. 
In  Otero County: 
MT in Alamogordo on June 3 had two  HARRIS’S HAWKS near the  
Airport. 
One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake  at the Holloman Lakes,  
but  not drive in and can still bird there.  MT on June 3 reported   
Lagoon G still closed, with many of the salt cedars  removed. 
. 
In Rio  Arriba County: 
ChB on June 7 at Apache Creek at the top  of Cumbre Pass did not  
find  the Boreal Owl, but found a singing gray FOX SPARROW, four  
PINE  GROSBEAKS, and a displaying DUSKY GROUSE. 
JP and WW on June 4 at the Elkhorn Lodge in Chama saw a CATBIRD.  
ChB  had a singing VEERY on June 7 in willow thickets behind the 
Vista  del Sol Motel in Chama. 
At Heron Lake JP and WW on June 4 at the lake saw two CATTLE  
EGRETS. 
They had four MOUNTAIN PLOVERS about 20  miles north of Tres  
Piedras on June 5. 
. 
In  Roosevelt County: 
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of  Melrose JP, JO, WW, and LL  
on May  21 saw a LEAST FLYCATCHER and two female AMERICAN REDSTARTS.   
On May  22 JP and WW saw the redstart, a BRONZED COWBIRD, a CATBIRD,  
and a  SWAINSON’S THRUSH.  On May 30 JP and  WW reported only a  
BELL’S  VIREO of the eastern type. 
. 
In San  Juan County; 
ChB on June 1 had an adult ARCTIC TERN at  Morgan Lake west of  
Farmington with CALIFORNIA and FRANKLIN’S GULLS.  On June 2 WW had  
no  ARCTIC, but saw an ELEGANT TERN and two LEAST TERNS.  Later MB  
saw  the least terns and two ARCTIC TERNS with the ELEGANT (photos).   
Then  ChB on June 2 had the adult Elegant Tern, the two Arctic  
Terns,  three Least Terns, and a flying BROWN PELICAN (photos).  TR  
reported a LAUGHING GULL at the lake on May 29 (photo).  With TR on  
June 4  JP and WW did not find the Elegant or Arctic Terns, but had  
one  Least Tern and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW. 
At Animas Park in Farmington on June 4  there was a BLACK PHOEBE  
and a  hybrid INDIGO x LAZULI BUNTING male. 
Along US 64 at the Rio Arriba border with  San Juan there was a  
GRAY  VIREO. 
. 
In San  Miguel County: 
PN on  May 31 in the Panchuela area on the way to Jacks Creek area  
in the  Pecos Wilderness had a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER. 
. 
In  Sandoval County: 
JMc and SO on May 16 along the Rio Grande  at Algodones saw a  
BLACK  HAWK in flight a mile north of the Diversion Dam.  Two CEDAR  
WAXWINGS were in the area.  On June 6 they again saw the two  
waxwings and the black hawk a mile north of the dam. 
. 
In  Santa Fe County: 
JB on May 29 found ACORN WOODPECKERS on  Borrego Mesa near  
Cordova on Forest Rd. 306 in young oaks in the area of the 2002  
Borrego Fire area (photo).  He saw three there on May 30 with DUSKY  
FLYCATCHER and CASSIN’S FINCH. 
And on May 27 JB had a female BOBOLINK at  the north end of the  
pond  on Caja del Rio Rd. and Wildlife Way (photo). 
Also on May 27 at Galisteo JB had a  DICKCISSEL singing 150 yards  
below  the bridge.  There was also a GREEN  HERON. 
RG had two LONG-BILLED CURLEWS on Simmons  Rd. on June 3 with a  
MOUNTAIN PLOVER on White Lakes Rd. 
. 
In  Sierra County: 
DC on June 8 at the Rock Canyon Marina  saw a LAUGHING GULL, and  
five  immature CALIFORNIA GULLS. 
DC on June 7 again saw the BARN OWL in  the ledge near the Las  
Palomas exit near mile marker 71 along I-25. 
Going south from Williamsburg along the  rio DC on May 31 had a  
WHITE-EYED VIREO (photo).  Directions: I-25, Exit 75 – illiamsburg,  
then  south less than a mile on NM 187 to the yellow cattle guard  
that's  0.3 mi beyond mm 36. Left at the cattle guard and go 1.3  
miles  along the GRADED road that roughly parallels the river. I put  
up  some red surveyor tape where I first had the bird. For those  
from  the Ladder Ranch CBC that were at the RUBL showing you could  
go 1.1  mi upstream from there to get to the vireo spot..  He had a  
flock  of 184 LESSER NIGHTHAWKS and two singing BELL’S VIREOS.  He  
saw  the White-eyed Vireo again on June 4 .1 mile from the red tape.   
He  also had 143 nighthawks. 
Later on May 31 at Animas Creek he saw  six BROWN-CRESTED  
FLYCATCHERS and a HOODED ORIOLE. 
DC at the Hillsboro Park had a  YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and a male  
HOODED  ORIOLE.  On June 2 along NM 37 south  of Hillsboro there were  
five  skylarking CASSIN’S SPARROWS, two BURROWING OWLS, and six  
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.  Along Walnut St. in Kingston at the stream  
crossing there was ten BAND-TAILED PIGEONS. 
DC on June 7 at Percha Dam Park had two  MOORHENS at the pond,  
and a  pair of BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS in a new location.  At Rock  
Canyon  Marina DC also saw the adult BROWN PELICAN again and JP had  
it on  May 12.  At the Monticello Points on  June 3 DC saw a CATTLE  
EGRET,  WHITE PELICAN, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and a male INDIGO BUNTING. 
DC on May 15 along NM 59 had two PURPLE MARTINS in Poverty  
Creek.  Farther west  at the Mud Hole Outfitters Ponds he had  
three  more martins and ten PINYON JAYS. 
At Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant  Butte Dam DC on May 18 at  
the  park had a RED-EYED VIREO (photo), a female DOWNY WOODPECKER, a  
DUSKY  FLYCATCHER, two vocal BELL’S VIREOS, and four BRONZED  
COWBIRDS.  DC on May  15 had six PHAINOPEPLAS in fruiting plants.   
On  June 1 there DC had an OSPREY, two Bell’s Vireos, and six  
cowbirds. 
DC saw the LEAST BITTERN on May 14  (photo) and says the Catfish  
Camp  is two miles north of Indian Springs.  DC saw the bittern  
again  on May 27.

In  Socorro County: 
CB on June 5 had at least two CEDAR  WAXWINGS at the Turtle Bay  
Park  on the NMTU campus in Socorro. 
At Bosque del Apache Refuge south of San  Antonio SOW and JBl on  
May 13  had a hybrid BULLOCK’S x BALTIMORE ORIOLE at the visitor  
center  feeder.  CR and SD saw the oriole on  May 15.  A WHITE-TAILED  
KITE  was in the area just east of the seasonal road at dusk.  DCo 
on May  24 saw a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.

In  Taos County: 
JP and WW on June 5 at the Taos Ski  Valley saw a GRAY JAY, a  
male  THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, a singing PINE GROSBEAK, and a DIPPER.

In  Torrance County: 
CR and SD on May 31 had an immature  MISSISSIPPI KITE at Encino.

Field  Trips: 
. 
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips.  All phone  
numbers begin with 505.  On June 10 to the Isleta Marsh and Los  
Lunas  River Park for kites with Donna Royer, 869-6882; on June 17  
to the  Sandia Peak Ski Area and Balsam Glade cnic Area in the  
Sandias with Gale Owings, 255-8333.

Mesilla Valley Audubon on June 19 will do the Pine Tree Trail at  
Aguirre Springs for a five mile hike up 1000 feet.  Register by  
June  17.  Contact is David Griffin at  575-382-2080.

The  Rio Grande Nature Center has morning bird walks on Sunday and  
Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. from the pond at the parking  lot. 
. 
From  May on there will be Tuesday morning bird walks in the Sandias  
by the  Forest Service.  Meet at the Ranger  Station in Tijeras at 8.
